How We Help

You Have a Friend in the Business!

Zebra Communications edits fiction, nonfiction, short stories, essays, reports, magazines, newsletters, magazine articles, business materials, and more. We edit electronically or on the printed copy; the decision is up to you. Click here to learn more about hard-copy editing and click here to learn about electronic editing.

Our mission is to help you find publishing success in whatever approach you take, so we look for ways to make your manuscript more marketable. Click here to see what our clients say about us.

If you plan to seek a traditional publisher, we make sure your manuscript stands head and shoulders above the competition, if at all possible.

If you plan to self-publish, we make sure you produce the finest quality book, to ensure your success.

We address the nitpicky details of a manuscript as well as broad elements such as plot, character development, organization, clarity of information, creative-writing issues, and other minutiae that make a manuscript publishable.

We offer two levels of service and we offer electronic editing or hard-copy editing. Pick the method and level that is right for you.

Level II is our in-depth editing service, and it has the potential for being the most educational one. Level II is available for hard-copy or electronic editing.

With Level II hard-copy editing, your manuscript gets a full line edit that corrects every technical flaw, including grammar, punctuation, style, or syntactical errors, plus you receive a printed evaluation with suggestions for improvement and explanations for every mark on the manuscript. For nonfiction manuscripts the report addresses organization, flow, creative writing, marketability, and more. For fiction manuscripts the report also addresses elements such as plot, characterization, dialogue, and more.

With Level II electronic editing on your Microsoft Word file, we use Track Changes so you can see our suggestions clearly. Your manuscript gets a full line edit as described above, plus you may also receive a file with questions or comments from your editor. You do not get a full printed report the way you would with hard-copy editing, but you save time by having allowed us to make the changes to your file for you.

Level I covers the broad aspects or a manuscript and does not include corrections to grammar and punctuation. Level I is available for hard-copy editing only and only for manuscripts we have already edited at least once. When should you opt for a Level I? When you have made sweeping changes to your manuscript after our initial edit, and you want feedback on the changes you have made. Level I includes a printed evaluation and suggestions for further improvement, but it may not have as much marking on the actual manuscript itself. It is especially helpful for writers who want to ensure that a revised plot works or that a rewritten nonfiction book has impact and marketability.

If you are ready to send your manuscript, see the Editing Request and fill out the appropriate form.

Before you wander into the publishing jungle alone, know the facts:

  • Successful writers do not final-edit their own material. Writers cannot read their own material objectively. Check acknowledgments. You will usually see a "thank-you" to an editor.
  • Your manuscript must be devoid of flaws before traditional publishers will consider it.
  • The biggest problem with self-published books is the lack of professional editing, which makes the book appear unprofessional.
  • Book publishers prefer Chicago Style, which differs from business English. Do you know the difference?
